Construction ceremony for the Schweinfurt-Oberndorf battery storage project
Munich, October 1 2026
Together with Stadtwerke Schweinfurt, we are building a battery energy storage system with around 20 MW of power and around 50 MWh of capacity at the Oberndorf substation. Commissioning is planned for Q1 2027.

Together with Stadtwerke Schweinfurt, we have reached an important milestone in the construction of the large-scale battery storage system in Schweinfurt-Oberndorf: the topping-out ceremony. Representatives from politics, public administration, business, academia and the energy sector joined the project team to celebrate the progress on site.
The project
The storage system is being built directly at the existing substation and will connect to the public grid through it. It has a power rating of around 20 megawatts and a capacity of around 50 megawatt-hours. As a stand-alone facility, it is not tied to any single wind or solar plant. It draws electricity from the grid and feeds it back at a later time. This adds flexibility to the power system, which becomes more important as the share of wind and solar generation grows.
A partnership on equal terms
enerpeak and Stadtwerke Schweinfurt are delivering the project together as project partners with WT Energiespeicher responsible for construction as EPC partner. We thank everyone involved: the Stadtwerke, WT Energiespeicher, the planning and construction companies, the authorities and the financing partners.
“With the large-scale battery storage system in Oberndorf, we are actively helping to shape tomorrow’s energy infrastructure. The project adds flexibility to the power system and expands our expertise in an important field of the future. Together with our partners, we are taking responsibility for a modern and future-proof energy supply in the region,” says Thomas Kästner, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Schweinfurt GmbH.
Next steps
The remaining construction phases will follow until commissioning in the first quarter of 2027. “Our shared goal is to advance the remaining project phases consistently and bring the facility into operation as planned,” says Dr. Stefan Seipl, enerpeak.

Joint venture between enerpeak and BESS Broadway
Munich, October 1 2026
Munich based BESS Project Development Company enerpeak, and BESS Broadway, a global development platform acquiring and developing grid-connected BESS projects across the UK, Europe, Australia and other key markets, have entered into a joint venture to develop 700 MW (approx. 1.5 GWh) of firmly reserved utility-scale battery energy storage in Germany, with the potential to expand by a further 700 MW with the same capacity.
The partnership covers two transmission-connected projects in Southern and Northern Germany, which will be jointly developed to Ready-To-Build (RTB) over the coming years. Both projects connect directly to the Ultra-High Voltage Grid of TenneT and will contribute to grid stability and the integration of renewable energy in Germany.
Applications to expand the portfolio to a total of 1.4 GW are already under way.
The projects are planned on the basis of Battery Energy Storage technology from CATL, the world’s largest manufacturer of Battery Energy Storage systems, with whom BESS Broadway maintains a strong technology partnership across its portfolio. This partnership secures access to proven technology and manufacturing capacity at the scale these projects require.
For BESS Broadway, this joint venture marks their entry into the German market, one of Europe’s most dynamic storage markets, and a cornerstone of their growing European portfolio. For enerpeak, it validates years of development work on two of the most advanced BESS sites in the country and builds the basis for a joint platform with the potential for further growth.
We look forward to building this together.
